Malta Port Review
Overall- A- With great sites, beautiful architecture, a walkable town from the port and the ease of English speakers, Malta is an ideal cruise destination.
Ease of Travel- About as easy as it gets, assuming you can walk an incline. The ships dock right beneath Valletta, and you can either walk up the hill to the city or walk up through the parking garage for the mall right there, and take an elevator up the rest of the way. The bus station is at the top of that hill also, so if you wanted to visit some of the farther flung destinations, that is easy also. Once in Valletta, it is great and easy to walk around.
Quality of Sites- The sites are not to the level of Rome or Florence, but can certainly hold their own. The co-cathedral is beautiful and historic, as is the Knight's palace. Shopping is plentiful and great. There are many lesser known, but still great churches, as well as more touristy attractions such as The Great Siege of Malta. There is also a beautiful blue grotto. Alas, this is the only category which causes Malta to lose enough points to go from an A+ to an A-, since it just doesn't have anything world-class.
Safety/Comfortable- I felt completely safe and comfortable here the entire time. The people are so kind and welcoming to tourists. The restrooms were nice and had seats. Everyone speaks English, and I felt no unease at all walking around the streets.
Food- The food is Mediterranean and is generally good and a good value. We thorougly enjoyed our meal, but there are American fast food restaurants as well if you would prefer to go that route.
My 2 Cents- Malta is a perfect cruise port, with great shopping, good sites, no need to ever take a shore excursion and that old-Europe feel that we all want when we visit over there. The kind, English speaking people make this port a pure joy.
