Okay, so you could say the magic began in Barcelona, but the cruise begins today.
For all the future cruisers, our movies are: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Up, The Princess and the Frog, The Blind Side, Up in the Air, When in Rome, Old Dogs, The Last Song, Disney Nature Oceans, Alice in Wonderland. Our schedule is similar to the 11 day with Heath Hyche ? being the entertainment on the Pirates night and Villains Tonight on the second to last day. No big show the Civitavecchia night and the premier of Oceans in Naples. Our magician is a flamboyant weirdo named Phil Keller and our ventriliquist is a new guy to DCL, British and very funny. He doesn't have his own big show in the WD theatre. Family, now that is out of the way, we are having a blast. Today we participated in a Disney trivia game show, and a scavenger hunt that involved James bringing an old lady's bra up to the front. LOL. Our dining partners, Maynard and Eliza, are awesome and are Disney freaks like us, except California style. The food has been good, not great. Tomorrow is a day at sea, and we have lots planned. Kiss Veronica for me, Mom, Dad and Kris! I

So, we landed in Barcelona and it was raining. We found the train after a bit and made our way into town. First impressions of the neighborhoods we had to go through to get to town were not great. Grafitti and high rise, low cost housing were the norm. But after a few hours here, I can say that I LOVE Europe. Barcelona is a neat place. As my title suggests, it feels like a combo of New York and New Orleans, with really old stuff.
The most amazing thing I saw today was the Sagrada Familia church. I have read others say that it is not worth it to pay to go in, but I disagree. You cannot see the carvings well enough from the road, and they are spectacular. They are practically the story of Jesus carved on the side of the church. Really. I just sat there and kept going... look,. there is Peter by the fire denying Jesus, and there is Jesus talking to the elders in the temple, and there are the soldiers casting lots for his clothes, and on it went. The interior is still being worked on, but is already amazing. It has so much natural light, and it was taller than any interior I have seen. (St. Peters will probably beat it next week) We also loved the Gothic Quarter. It consists of Roman walls and medieval winding alleys which open to little squares. We found a square named after Veronica and took a picture. I am so tired, but James wants to go back out this evening for a bit. Well, wish I could write more, but ironically, I am racing against the battery here because we have no converter for our charger, and on the boat, I will be racing against my internet time. Oh well. If you are coming to Barcelona, DO YOUR RESEARCH, especially the metro system was complicated to figure out, and we only did because I had researched so much. We love everyone back home, and can't wait to update more! Well, I am in the airport enjoying the free wireless. For those just now checking in on me from my facebook page, welcome. James and I are currently enroute to our first trip to Europe. We had not originally planned for it to be like this, always assuming we'd be backpacking through Germany, Austria and the Alps for our first trip. But we found a great military rate for this Disney cruise of the Mediterranean, and the rest is history. Our itinerary can be easily found all over this site as well as my research for this trip. We are most excited about Rome and least excited about Corsica, but at least that is toward the end of the vacation so we can relax more that day.
If you know us at all, you know that we are huge fans of Disney. So the fact that this cruise is a Disney one, is like the icing on the cake. I just read a book set in Barcelona, Cathedral of the Sea, which has made me even more excited about that city. If you like historical fiction, it is a great pick! I won't waste time anymore. Hopefully the next blog will be from Barcelona... |
